How to Calculate Area and Number of Sets
Rectangular pool areaFloor = length × width
2 long walls = 2 × length × average depth
2 short walls = 2 × width × average depth
Total area = floor + walls + steps + benches + other painted parts
Concrete Sealer primer (1 coat)Area for 1 coat: 50 m²
Theoretical at 40 µm: ~52 m² per set per coat
Supplied: 2 sets to allow for concrete absorption and roughness
W-4000 topcoat (2 coats)Area for 2 coats: 50 × 2 = 100 m²
Theoretical at 40 µm: ~41 m² per set per coat
Supplied: 3 sets covering 100 m² of application with an allowance for losses
Estimating formula: number of sets = area to be coated ÷ practical coverage per set per coat, rounded up to whole sets. On site, use a practical coverage of 3040 m² per set per coat to allow for roughness and losses. If the surface is very rough, has many steps, or the actual area exceeds 50 m², recalculate before starting.
Controlling Thickness per Coat
Target wet film (volume solids ~55 ± 2%)| Dry film (DFT) | Volume solids | Wet film (WFT) |
|---|
| 30 µm | 55% | 55 µm |
| 40 µm (target) | 55% | 73 µm |
| 50 µm | 55% | 91 µm |
WFT = DFT ÷ Volume Solids
Example: 40 ÷ 0.55 = 72.7 microns
Using a wet film comb- Roll a test area that matches the real surface
- Press the comb vertically into the wet paint straight away, with the teeth touching the substrate
- Lift it straight out and read between the last wetted tooth and the next dry tooth
- Measure at least 5 points per area, and more at corners, steps and rough surfaces
- Adjust pressure, roller or paint load until readings are close to target never let paint pool
Surface Acceptance and Moisture Checks
Surface acceptance before starting- New concrete should be at least 28 days old, or fully dry and sound
- Free from dust, friable render, oil, grease, curing compounds, algae, efflorescence and contaminants
- Remove all blistered, cracked or flaking old paint; sand well-bonded old paint to a matte, keyed finish
- Repair cracks, pinholes, voids and joints; repair materials must be cured and dry as specified
- Abrade the surface to an even profile, then vacuum or remove all dust
- After washing or pressure-washing, wait until completely dry before checking moisture and painting
Moisture and environment limits| Check | Limit |
|---|
| Concrete surface moisture | 4% (meters reading % for concrete) or per the meter manufacturer |
| Air relative humidity | 85% |
| Surface temperature | Above 10°C and at least 3°C above dew point |
| Surface condition | Dry no droplets, ponding, dew or trapped moisture |
Measure and record before the primer, before topcoat 1 and before topcoat 2, at several points floor, walls, corners, steps, low spots and areas where water has ponded. For relative-scale meters, compare against a dry reference area and do not paint any area reading abnormally high until the cause is found and it is dry.
Mixing and Using Thinners
Concrete Sealer 2 Part (primer)- Stir Part A, add Part B at A:B = 4:1 by volume, and mix down to the bottom and sides of the container
- Add Thinner W-M68 only after mixing A+B, 05% by volume if needed
- Use the mix within approx. 4 hours at 30°C
UNITHANE W-4000 (topcoat)- Stir Part A and add Part B at A:B = 4:1 by volume
- Add Thinner W-M22 only after mixing, 010% if needed
- Mix a fresh batch for the final coat never use leftover paint from coat 2
Important don'ts- Never swap thinners: W-M68 is for the primer only, W-M22 for the topcoat only
- Do not split kits by estimation; if you must, use accurate measuring containers and keep the 4:1 ratio
- Do not over-thin it causes thin film, lower coverage and slower curing
- Discard mixed paint past its pot life; never add thinner to revive it
3-Coat Application Procedure
Accept the surface and check moistureInspect the surface against the criteria, measure moisture and conditions at several points, and record readings before starting.
Coat 1 Concrete Sealer primerStir Part A, add Part B at 4:1 and mix to the bottom and sides. Add W-M68 05% after mixing if needed. Apply continuously by roller, brush or spray. Use within ~4 h at 30°C; never thin paint that has started to harden.
WFT ~73 µmRecoat after 14 h (23°C)
Coat 2 W-4000 first topcoatWait for the minimum recoat time, and check the primer is dry, sound and clean. Lightly sand if glossy or past the recoat window, then remove dust. Re-check moisture do not paint if dew or moisture returns. Mix 4:1 and add W-M22 010% if needed.
WFT ~73 µmRecoat after 3 h (23°C)
Coat 3 W-4000 final topcoatWait for the minimum recoat time, lightly sand the whole surface to aid inter-coat adhesion, remove all dust and re-check moisture. Mix a fresh 4:1 batch, apply evenly, and correct roller marks, pooling or runs before it starts to set.
WFT ~73 µmCure 5 days before filling (23°C)
Times referenced at approx. 23°C see the drying-time table below for other temperatures.
Drying and Recoat Times
| Product and stage | 10°C | 23°C | 40°C |
|---|
| Concrete Sealer touch dry | 8 h | 4 h | 2 h |
| Concrete Sealer recoat after at least | 48 h | 14 h | 5 h |
| W-4000 touch dry | 2 h | 1 h | 30 min |
| W-4000 recoat after at least | 6 h | 3 h | 1 h 30 min |
| W-4000 full cure before filling | 10 days | 5 days | 2 days |
Times are approximate. Thick films, low temperature, high humidity, heavy thinning or poor ventilation slow drying and curing always check actual conditions before the next coat and before filling.

Frequently Asked Questions
What area does this kit cover?
A total painted area of approx. 50 m², including the floor, walls, steps, benches and all parts to be painted not the water surface area. If the actual area exceeds 50 m², recalculate before starting.
What is the difference between the 120-micron and 160-micron systems?
This kit is 3 coats (1 primer + 2 topcoat) for approx. 120 microns total. The 160-micron system is 4 coats (2 primer + 2 topcoat). Ask our team which suits your pool.
What is the mixing ratio?
Both Concrete Sealer and W-4000 mix at A:B = 4:1 by volume. Mix down to the bottom and sides of the container.
How much thinner can I add?
Concrete Sealer: W-M68 at 05%. W-4000: W-M22 at 010% by volume. Add only after mixing A+B, and only when needed.
When must I check moisture?
Before the primer, before topcoat 1 and before topcoat 2, at several points. Surface moisture 4%, RH 85%, surface temperature above 10°C and at least 3°C above dew point.
Do I need to sand between coats?
Before the first topcoat, lightly sand if the primer is glossy or past its recoat window. Before the final coat, lightly sand the whole surface for adhesion. Remove all dust each time.
How long before I can fill the pool?
Approx. 10 days at 10°C, 5 days at 23°C and 2 days at 40°C and the finish must pass the acceptance criteria.
Is a wet film thickness comb included?
No. It is a recommended extra (20370 microns), not part of the 13 pieces unless stated in the quotation.
Can the paint fix leaks or structural problems?
No. The kit does not fix structural problems, leaks, groundwater pressure or concrete movement. These must be resolved before starting the coating system.
Technical note: Thickness, coverage, drying and curing values are targets and job-control guidance. Actual results depend on the substrate, temperature, humidity, ventilation, mixing, equipment and workmanship. Trial a small area before the full job and record site readings for every coat.
Want to check the right paint quantity for your pool?
Send us your pool's width × length × depth or photos of the surface, and our team will calculate the area and recommend a kit.
