Laswim EC Series Salt Chlorinator Showing E5: How Much Salt Should You Add?

The E5 code indicates salt concentration is too low. Before adding salt, test the actual level and calculate how much you need, so you dont overdose.

E5
Meaning per the manual

Salt Concentration Too Low

E5 is a warning code, not a salt reading. Test the actual level before adding salt.

Normal salt level per the manual
3,500 ppm

3 Steps to Add Salt Correctly

1
Test the actual salt level in the pool
Use a salt meter or a dedicated salt test kit to find out how much salt is currently in the water.
2
Calculate only the shortfall
The amount depends on the current salt level and water volume. Dont add salt by the bag without testing first.
3
Turn off the chlorinator, but keep the pump running
Spread the salt around the pool so it doesnt pile up on the floor. Per the manual, run the pump for 24 hours so the salt dissolves and circulates fully, then retest before switching the chlorinator back on.

How to Calculate the Amount of Salt

1 ppm of salt in 1 m³ of water is about 1 gram, so the calculation is:

Salt to add (kg) = Pool volume (m³) × (3,500 measured ppm) ÷ 1,000
Example from the manual

A 50 m³ pool measures 2,500 ppm and needs to reach 3,500 ppm

50 × (3,500 2,500) ÷ 1,000 = 50 kg

Approximate Salt Quantity Table

Target 3,500 ppm, calculated with the formula above (unit: kg)

Figures are theoretical estimates. Add salt in portions and retest after it has dissolved and circulated.

Salt Is Back to Normal but E5 Still Shows

Have a technician check the unit before adding more, to avoid pushing the salt level too high.

E5 is a warning code, not a salt reading, and it doesnt mean the cell has failed. Test the actual level before deciding on a fix.

Disconnect power before removing equipment or doing maintenance. Internal inspection should be done by a technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the E5 code mean on a Laswim salt chlorinator?

E5 means salt concentration is too low. Test the actual level and calculate the amount needed before adding salt.

What salt level should a Laswim EC Series run at?

The Laswim EC Series manual specifies a normal salt level of 3,500 ppm.

How much salt for a 50 m³ pool at 2,500 ppm?

You need another 1,000 ppm to reach 3,500 ppm, which is about 50 kg of salt.

Should the chlorinator be off while adding salt?

Yes. Turn the chlorinator off but keep the pump running. Per the manual, run the pump for 24 hours so the salt dissolves and circulates, then retest before switching the chlorinator on.

Salt is normal now but E5 still shows. What should I do?

Dont add more salt. Have a technician check the unit to avoid pushing the salt level too high.

What is the optimal salt level? For health, longer cell lifespan, and maximum performance of your salt chlorinator, 3,000–3,500 ppm is the ideal range.
Different salt chlorinator brands require different salt levels such as 2,700-3,400 ppm, 3,000-4,000 ppm, or even up to 5,000 ppm. However, the ideal range for both the swimmer and the machine is 3,000-3,500 ppm.
