Hayward AquaRite 900 Is Running but Chlorine Is Low or Zero: Whats the Cause?

Even if the display shows a normal salt level and the Generating light is on, you still need to test chlorine, because the amount produced may not meet your pools demand.

The Display Shows Salt, Not Chlorine

What the display shows

Salt Level

The number 3200 shown here is an example salt level of 3,200 ppm.

What you must test separately

Free Chlorine

You need a separate free chlorine test kit.

1

Start With the Unit Settings

AUTO OFF
Switch position
Is the switch on AUTO, or accidentally left on OFF?

% Output
Is the % output set too low?
Pump run time
Is the pump running long enough for the unit to produce chlorine?

The manual gives an example of about 8 hours of pump time for an average-size pool, but this must be adjusted for pool size, output capacity and chlorine demand. It is not a fixed time for every pool.

2

Check the Salt Level and Cell Condition

Salt too low or too high Unsuitable water temperature Scale in the cell

These can reduce or stop chlorine production. Look at the warning lights together with actual water test results.

3

Check the Waters Chlorine Demand

The manual lists other causes to check:

Low CYA (stabilizer)
Warmer water increases chlorine demand
Nitrogen compounds in the water
Recent use of certain algaecides, such as Yellow Out, which can raise chlorine demand
Act on the Test Results

Adjust the % output and pump time, check water balance and retest chlorine. If a chlorine shock is needed, follow the chemical label and your pool caretakers advice.

Clear Water Alone Doesnt Mean Chlorine Is Sufficient

Test water quality before using the pool, especially when chlorine readings are low or zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Generating light is on. Why is chlorine still low?

The Generating light shows the unit is producing chlorine, but the amount may not meet your pools demand. Check the % output, pump time and the waters chlorine demand.

Is the number on the display the chlorine level?

No. The display shows salt. You need a separate free chlorine test kit.

How many hours a day should the pump run?

The manual gives about 8 hours for an average-size pool as an example, but it must be adjusted for pool size, output capacity and chlorine demand. It is not fixed for every pool.

What should I send for the shop to assess it?

Send your chlorine, salt, pH and CYA readings, plus pool size, cell model, % output and pump time, to LINE @winwinpool.

Leaving Home for 7-10 Days During the New Year How to Maintain Your Swimming Pool So Its Clear and Ready to Swim When You Return
The New Year holiday is a time when many families travel to other provinces or overseas, leaving their homes unoccupied for several days. For homeowners with swimming pools, this often leads to concerns that the water may turn green, develop unpleasant odors, or require costly cleaning and water replacement upon return. In reality, closing a swimming pool for 7–10 days is not difficult if the correct water care principles are applied. The key is proper water preparation before leaving, using the right chemicals to work in place of daily maintenance. This approach helps control algae growth, bacteria, and the accumulation of dirt during periods when the pool is not in use. This one-time, 10-day pool care method is designed for residential pools and can be applied to both homes without automatic control systems and those equipped with Smart Home or Smart App monitoring. It allows pool owners to reduce system operation while still maintaining stable water quality throughout the holiday period. When chemicals are selected correctly and adjusted according to pool size, homeowners can return from their trip to find clear, clean water. With minimal effort—such as vacuuming settled debris—the pool is ready for immediate use, eliminating the need for draining or refilling and ensuring a stress-free return home.
